To manufacture balls and rollers for rolling bearings, steels capable of developing a very high hardness after treatment are required, to minimize friction wear and withstand high compression stresses.

Other required properties are: good workability in the spheroidized condition and reduced hardening deformations.

Steel with about 1% carbon content and up to 1.5% chromium meet the mentioned requirements.
